Cork City sign son of two time European Cup winner on season long loan

After a stint with AFC Telford United, Ricardo Dinanga, a graduate of the Cork City academy, has agreed to a two-
year contract with Shrewsbury Town of the EFL League One.

Before Southampton and Stoke City play in the Carabao Cup Fourth Round at St Mary’s Stadium, Stoke City’s

Freddie Anderson warms up with teammate Jaden Dixon.

Freddie Anderson, the son of two-time European Cup winner Viv Anderson, has joined Cork City on a season-long

loan from Stoke City.

The defender, a graduate of Manchester City’s academy, heads to Turner’s Cross after spending time with the USA

U20 team at a training camp in Florida.

In his debut senior match with Stoke City, Freddie Anderson defeated Carsile United in the closing minutes of the

Carabao Cup at Brunton Park. In October of last year, he turned eighteen.

The defender participated in a friendly match against Cork City at Turner’s Cross against the Rebel Army while

playing for Stoke’s first team throughout the summer.

Being given the chance to perform for such a fantastic and large audience makes me very happy.

City boss Tim Clancy said: “Freddie is a very impressive young defender, who we obviously got a close look at in last

summer’s friendly.

“It’s another deal that we have been working on for a while, so to finally get it done is great, and it’s brilliant that we

have him for the full season.”

The defender started out with the Manchester City academy before moving to the Stoke City during the summer of

2023.

Freddie Anderson went on to play for the Potters’ U21s on 14 occasions in during the 2024-25 season, he also wore

the captain’s armband during a victory over Woking in the FA Youth Cup.

The defender’s work was recognised in the United States, and it led to a call-up to the country’s U20s for a training

camp in West Palm Beach earlier this month.

Anderson’s team trained with Mauricio Pochettino’s senior men’s national team and they played MLS club Nashville

SC in a friendly.

The defender declares for the United States through his mother, and his father made history by being the first black

player to represent England.

Viv Anderson had a storied career that saw spells with Nottingham Forest, Manchester United, and Arsenal.

At Tallaght Stadium, the forward made his debut in a 3-0 loss to Shamrock Rovers. In August 2020, he had his best
game in the green and white shirt when he faced Longford Town in the FAI Cup at Turner’s Cross.

Before launching a shot from a tight angle that struck the roof of the net in the 120th minute, Dinanga dribbled into

the area and ducked past two defenders.

During a 3-0 triumph over Sligo Rovers at Turner’s Cross that season, the forward also scored the third goal.

He played for the Sky Blues academy in Coventry City after earning a transfer there.

Dinanga left the CBS Arena to search for first team opportunities, although he never made an appearance there.
