Sunderland can end striker search with former Man City man who can leave for £0 in January – opinion

As is often the case, Sunderland are looking to sign a new striker. But Kristjaan Speakman has so far suffered setbacks in the search, the latest of which regards Tom Cannon.

Tom Cannon seemed like Sunderland’s guy. However, Cannon is expected to join Sheffield United for an initial cost of £10 million, which will rise to £3 million.
It’s a significant lift for the Blades and a setback for the Black Cats. Sunderland, on the other hand, does not appear to be wasting time, with reports of links to a handful of other attackers circulating.

Sunderland are interested in signing Matija Frigan from Westerlo, and Kristjaan Speakman has reportedly identified Preston forward Emil Riis as a January target.

There are two weeks remaining in the January transfer market, and the demand for a new striker is mounting. Aaron Connolly has left Sunderland to join Millwall alongside Alex Neil, leaving Regis Le Bris with only Wilson Isidor and Eliezer Mayenda as his striker options.

However, there could be an excellent option for the Black Cats in La Liga.

Sunderland should make a move for Kelechi Iheanacho at Sevilla

Kelechi Iheanacho, a former Manchester City and Leicester City striker, joined La Liga side Sevilla this summer. Following Leicester’s promotion to the Premier League, the Nigerian signed for Sevilla on a free transfer.

But he has struggled since. Iheanacho is failed to score in nine La Liga appearances and is expected to leave. According to recent sources from Spain, Leeds United is one of the teams associated with Sevilla and willing to allow Iheanacho depart for free.

Last season, the 28-year-old scored five goals in 23 Championship games for the Foxes, but in seven years with Leicester City, former Manchester City player Iheanacho scored 61 goals in 232 games, 42 of which were in the Premier League.

Kelechi Iheanacho’s Sevilla wages could be an issue

As many might imagine, Iheanacho earns a lot of money at Sevilla, which could explain why they want to get rid of him during the January transfer window.

According to Capology, Iheanacho earns £79,000 a week at Sevilla. However, Sunderland’s owners have demonstrated a willingness to invest money in order to boost Le Bris’ promotion campaign.

Sunderland is paying Enzo Le Fee’s Roma wages, which are reported to be as much as £69,000 per week, therefore signing Iheanacho until the end of the season may be within Kyril Louis-Dreyfus’ budget.

He is an accomplished striker who has previously demonstrated his abilities at a higher level than the Championship. Iheanacho would be an excellent backup to Isidor and Mayenda, and could even start on occasion.

It’s unclear whether he’d be willing to sign a half-season contract with Sunderland. However, the addition of Le Fee and Sunderland’s recent success will undoubtedly help their argument.
