Sheffield United Make “Big Statement” Signing

Tom Cannon, a Republic of Ireland international, was signed by Sheffield United in January, strengthening their attacking lineup. The striker has committed to a long-term deal through 2029, with the club holding an option for an extra year. He joins from Premier League team Leicester City.

After a stellar loan stint with Stoke City in the first part of the season, when the 22-year-old scored 11 goals across all competitions, Cannon has joined the team.According to reports, United paid Leicester City £10 million in guaranteed money for the striker, plus an extra £3 million in performance-based bonuses.

The Blades, who had already signed fellow international forward Ben Brereton Diaz, made the move during an aggressive transfer window. Chris Wilder, the manager, said he was thrilled to have Cannon arrive.

“This signing demonstrates the club’s ambition,” Wilder stated. In addition to being a young attacker with a lot of promise, Tom has significant experience playing at this level. I’ve been a long-time admirer of his, and I’m overjoyed to have him join our extended vision.

Is Tom Cannon The Real Deal?

After helping Leicester City win the championship the previous season, Cannon has established himself as a reliable goal scorer in the Championship. His reputation was further cemented by his performances at Stoke, where he attracted interest from several clubs with his combination of finishing skill and poise in front of goal. He has scored 21 goals in 44 complete 90-minute games over the course of two Championship seasons.

But a closer look at his data shows where he can do better. According to FBref, his non-penalty predicted goals per 90 put him in the 43rd percentile of Championship forwards. Furthermore, he has made very little original contribution:

• Expected Assists (0.06 per 90): 31st percentile
• Key Passes (0.66 per 90): 21st percentile
• Shot-Creating Actions (1.63 per 90): 18th percentile
• Goal-Creating Actions (0.18 per 90): 22nd percentile

In addition, the statistics support the notion that Cannon isn’t renowned for his hold-up play. His success rate in aerial duels is quite low.

Cannon reflected on his choice to join Sheffield United and said he was excited about the Bramall Lane project.
