Reading FC: Saturday development could be a blessing and a curse ahead of transfer deadline
Since the end of the previous season, they have lost a number of players, including Clinton Mola and Nesta Guinness-Walker, who were released, as well as former loanees.
Femi Azeez quit the team as well, attempting to sign with Millwall for an undisclosed sum.
Chem Campbell, who joined on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers, was the sole player the Royals were able to sign during the summer transfer season in exchange.
Players’ bodies have broken down, which is not surprising given that the Berkshire team has very little squad depth and must use the same players.
Ben Elliott is out of action for the foreseeable future after undergoing surgery on his thigh – and Amadou Mbengue is also set for a period on the sidelines after picking up an injury against Charlton Athletic. Andy Yiadom also continues to spend time on the sidelines, as well as Mamadi Camara, who will be gutted not to be fit during this period, when he could have started regularly. However, there was some positive news on the injury front on Saturday. Unfortunately for the Royals, they suffered a 3-1 defeat against Stockport County last weekend. However, they may look at the fact that three players returned to the matchday squad as a good outcome of the day.
An important thing was that Jeriel Dorsett was back on the bench after being out for a while.
Although Abraham Kanu has occasionally played well at left-back, he has also had some extremely shaky moments. With Dorsett back, the Royals’ left-hand side might be much stronger.
Dorsett has missed a lot of games this season and will want to get a respectable number of starts under his belt, so maybe he can remain healthy for a long time.
Additionally, Michael Craig returned to the matchday roster, which is advantageous because he is a flexible player who can play both central midfield and right defense.
The Berkshire team can only benefit by having an additional defensive midfield option, and he may return to starting at right-back if necessary.
It will be interesting to watch what role he plays from here until the end of the season because he performed effectively on the right-hand side early in the campaign.
The third player to return was Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan, whose arrival is likely the biggest plus given how dangerous he can be in the closing third when playing at his best.
