Forget Jobe Bellingham and Chris Rigg, keeping another star may be the most important thing Sunderland do in January

Sunderland must be careful not to lose sight of the fact that they are losing their best players because they are so intent on signing new players this month.

With a new striker as the top priority, Sunderland supporters were giddy with anticipation about who might come after Enzo Le Fee’s arrival at the beginning of January.

But given how well Regis Le Bris’ team is doing in the Championship this year, it makes sense that jealous looks have been directed at Wearside’s best players.

Although players like Chris Rigg and Jobe Bellingham appear to be key targets for Premier League teams, Sunderland skipper Dan Neil is currently drawing interest.

Everton add Dan Neil to their January shopping list

According to a report from The Telegraph, Neil is a top target for Everton as David Moyes looks to help the Toffees steer clear of relegation this season.

It is thought Moyes, who was Sunderland manager when Neil was developing through the club’s academy, is an “admirer” of the 23-year-old, and sees central midfield as a key area Everton need to improve in.

Everton have even sent scouts to watch Neil in the last two games and liked what they saw. However, with Sunderland on track for promotion this season, a deal will not be easy and the Black Cats are expected to resist.

Apparently, a £15m price tag has been put on Neil’s head with a view to deterring any potential suitors.

Sunderland would need a new leader to step up to replace Dan Neil

Dan Neil was praised for his display against Burnley recently, and that’s a common trend for how his season has gone so far.

Given that Neil appears to be finally receiving the recognition he merits, Sunderland’s chances of promotion as well as their immediate future would be severely damaged if he were to go.

Le Bris would have to find a new leader in addition to a new midfield player, which is no small feat.

Anthony Patterson is the clear choice in the current Sunderland team; he is a fellow academy graduate who knows what it means to play for the team, is relatively young yet seasoned, and can see and control the game from his position.
