Shea Charles Could Be About To Cross The Sheffield Football Divide

Shea Charles is expected to return to Southampton from Sheffield Wednesday this week after being recalled

from his loan term, but he might be heading back to the Steel City within days if Sheffield United’s Chris Wilder

gets his way.

According to saintsmarching.com Shea Charles return to Southampton could be fleeting.

The chairman of Sheffield Wednesday stated at a supporters’ meeting last week that the Saints had sent the

midfield midfielder back from his season-long loan as a tit for tat dispute because the Owls had refused to let

Saints sign Danny Rohl in an effort to replace Russell Martin.

If Saints later decide to loan him back to Sheffield, this time to Sheffield United, Wednesday’s opponents, that

argument may be doubled.

Ex Saints player and now manager at Brammall Lane, Chris Wilder had this to say:

“We’re looking for players of quality and pedigree and he was on the list.”

Whether that was a serious quote of just Wilder taking the chance to have a little bit of fun with his local rivals, is unclear.

Many Saints supporters were impressed with Shea Charles last season, especially in the early games, but

towards the end he struggled for game time under Russell Martin and it was no surprise that our ex manager

felt he was surplus to requirements this season.

So there will be some who will welcome Charles back into our squad, but I am not sure that it would be the right

thing to do.

I like the midfield player, but I believe that bringing him back into a club that is having a lot of problems could

hinder his growth and that it would not help him to be a member of a losing squad.

We would be better off sending him to a good Championship club in or near the promotion spots so he could get

some experience and hopefully develop a winning mentality. He would then return to St Mary’s in the summer

feeling rejuvenated and fresh, and more importantly, the games he had played would give him a confidence that

a slog in the Premier League and a few good beatings would not give him.

We need him for next season, not the end of this one, so even while I believe he would undoubtedly strengthen

the middle of our midfield, I don’t think Shea Charles would benefit from his presence.

Sheffield United would seem like a good fit on paper, but if I were the player, I wouldn’t consider going from

Wednesday to United so quickly. Although it would appease Blades supporters, Owls supporters would view

him as a traitor, and he would have to be careful where he went in Sheffield.
