Newcastle United in the running to secure huge PSR boost worth ‘at least €70m’
If the Magpies were to return to the Champions League, Newcastle United would get a significant reward.
Newcastle United stands to earn at least €70 million (£59.19 million) should the Magpies make it to the
Champions League.
Professor Robert Wilson, a specialist in football finance, said as much after the competition changed to a Swiss-
style model. Each team now earns €18.6 million (£15.72 million) just for qualifying, and each league victory
generates €2.1 million (£1.78 million). They even bank €700,000 (£591,925) in a draw.
Because each spot in the table brings in €275,000 (£232,541), the team that wins the league phase will receive
almost €10 million (£8.46 million). Teams who place between ninth and sixteenth in the league phase will
receive half of the €2 million (£1.69 million) bonus that will be awarded to the top eight teams. Making it to the
round of 16 costs €11 million (£9.3 million).
The new value pillar payment that clubs are entitled to, in addition to the equal share qualification money and
performance-related bonuses, is determined by the value of TV rights in the country in which the club is based
and the team’s coefficient ranking. Additionally, European nights bring in more money on match days.
Newcastle CEO Darren Eales originally valued playing in the final season of the original Champions League
structure at £45 million. However, Wilson explained that if the black-and-whites return to the top table in
Europe, they may earn even more money.
“There’s only so much Champions League money to go around – worth at least €70m per club from England,” he
stated. “If Newcastle and Aston Villa join the party too, the finances of any big six side missing out could find it
will result in a much more difficult transfer window and ability to fund player acquisitions to push on next
season.”
Even if Newcastle is only two points behind fourth place right now, fifth place can yet be sufficient to earn a spot
in the Champions League. The nations with the most combined success in UEFA tournaments this season will
once again receive two additional berths in the competition; England is presently leading the coefficient chart.
However, Newcastle will just want to finish as high as possible as the picture will only become clearer in the
final weeks of the campaign.
