“I should’ve stayed” – Celtic exit is a nagging regret, ‘pure Scottish madness’ missed
Ramon Vega has later acknowledged that he should never have left Celtic since he missed the “pure Scottish madness.”
In an interview with Blick today, the former Switzerland international acknowledges how much he enjoyed his time at Celtic.
Vega temporarily left Tottenham to spend six months on loan to Celtic between December 2000 and June 2001.
Before returning to Tottenham in the summer and subsequently joining Watford, he would make 26 appearances during that spell, scoring four goals overall.
He had the whole Celtic experience while he was a member, defeating Rangers both at home and away during a championship-winning season, defeating Hibernian 3-0 to win the SFA Cup, and even scoring twice on his debut versus
If he hadn’t accepted the invitation from Elton John and his friend Gianluca Vialli to join the project at Watford, the hectic six months might have lasted longer.
He eventually left the Hornets after just a year, relocating to US Créteil-L in France, and retired in 2003.
He now acknowledges that he regrets not staying in Scotland longer and that he enjoyed Celtic and the atmosphere at Celtic Park.
He declared, “It was pure Scottish madness.”
“We had two games versus Liverpool. Anfield Road first. The old ones drew 45,000 fans. Most of them were Celtic supporters. They were also noisier than the Reds. The chills will last long after your career is done. Amazing!
“You get chills the moment you enter Celtic Park.” The best part is when the coach speaks the final words, the players push one another, and the squad forms a circle shortly before kickoff. As silent as a mouse.
A dissipation of the circle results in an eruption. The noise from the fans becomes unbearable. Right now, the excitement of this stadium actually pours into your body!
“But in reality, I should have stayed at Celtic longer because, even after six months, the Scots still wanted me badly after my injury healed.”
