Middlesbrough will keep goal-hero Ben Doak for the remainder of the season after Liverpool’s deadline for recalling the winger expired.
Michael Carrick said on Thursday that the recall clause in the loan arrangement had an early deadline, but the specific date was unknown. But, after Doak scored the crucial second goal in Boro’s 2-0 win over West Brom on Tuesday evening, the Boro manager shared the good news about the 19-year-old winger.
Carrick stated, “Ben’s deadline has past. I always said I was calm! We’re obviously delighted that he’s here, but it hasn’t been a big deal for us. He demonstrated his dangerousness once more tonight, followed by a fantastic goal. It’s something he can do a little more of, coming inside onto his left foot, because it’s also something he excels at. I’m thrilled with it.
“He has that weapon and poses a distinct threat. Everyone has their own skills, but Ben’s style of play keeps him in the game and a threat at all times. We’re obviously glad he’ll be remaining here. He plays a significant role and will continue to do so for the duration of his tenure.
The news is a significant boost for Boro, as the Scotland international has been a standout performer this season. Along with Hayden Hackney’s opener, Doak’s goal propelled Boro back into the Championship play-offs as they secured their first home win of 2025 against Tony Mowbray’s Baggies.
Carrick commented on the triumph, saying, “It was a wonderful win. It was a tough game, and they are a talented team. We are aware of this. In the first half, we were excellent with the ball. We controlled it for long stretches, played some excellent things, and caused them difficulties while playing through them.
“In the second half, it was a different side from us, but we were extremely good defensively and didn’t give up anything. The boys were desperate to win and keep a clean sheet. I’m quite thrilled with the victory; it’s a positive step for us.”
Carrick was pleased with Boro’s ability to get through a difficult 15-minute opening to the second half, having previously lost positive positions in matches, especially on Saturday when they lost to Portsmouth after leading 1-0 at half-time.
He continued, “We can’t expect to dominate the entire game; there are two teams out there. Possession provides some control, although it is possible to control a game without the ball. We’re dangerous in transition, and we can use it to improve how we play.
