Huddersfield Town’s next League One opponents part company with boss after fresh setback

Ninth-placed Bolton Wanderers visit the John Smith’s Stadium on Saturday

Huddersfield Town’s forthcoming opponents Bolton Wanderers are searching for a new manager after parting company with Ian Evatt.

The 43-year-old left his position as Wanderers boss by mutual consent following Tuesday evening’s 2-1 home defeat against Charlton Athletic.

Evatt’s exit comes with the club ninth in the table, three points away from the play-off positions, but on a run of just two wins in nine League One matches. Former Barrow boss Evatt joined the Lancashire club in July 2020, leading the club to automatic promotion from League Two in his first season.

Evatt, renowned for his possession-based style of play, also guided Wanderers to EFL Trophy glory at Wembley in 2023. They also reached the League One play-off final last season, missing out on promotion after losing the showpiece fixture 2-0 to Oxford United.

Bolton chairman Sharon Brittan told the club’s website: “Ian arrived at a challenging time for Bolton Wanderers Football Club and his dedication to rebuilding both on and off the pitch has been commendable.

“He has created a tremendous legacy and will always be remembered for the successes he has brought. We wish him nothing but success in the future.”

Wanderers said they are determined to replace Evatt with the “right” person. It is anticipated that an announcement about the interim management will be made soon.

“There comes a point in football when a change needs to happen and the last thing I want is to damage what we have all built together,” Evatt said in a statement.

“I believe the club is still well placed to achieve its goals this season, and I want to give the board and players the best chance of doing that.”

Fourth-placed Town take on Wanderers this Saturday, kick-off 12:30pm.
