‘Symbol of transfer failure’ – Imminent Southampton signing seen as spectacular flop

On Monday, we covered claims from France and Belgium which stated Albert Gronbaek is about to make a move to Southampton. It was also reported the Rennes player has travelled to England to carry out medical tests with the Saints.

Tuesday’s edition of Ouest-France looks at the 23-year-old’s move to St Mary’s and shares their take on him.

They state the midfielder is about to be loaned to Southampton in the winter market, just months after he arrived from Bodø/Glimt.

The Denmark international has been a regular this season, making 16 league appearances. He’s managed two goals and an assist and despite this, the newspaper claims Rennes aren’t pleased with him.

According to Ouest-France, Jorge Sampaoli’s side paid €12m excluding bonuses [€3m] to the Norwegian club for Gronbaek. Six months later, they say he’s turned into a ‘spectacular failure’.

The report further adds the Dane is a ‘symbol of the transfer failure’ of the last summer window, and the worst business decision made by sporting director Frederic Massara.

Gronbaek is now on his way to Southampton and will hope things turn out better for him in England.
