Reading FC star addresses future amid transfer talk

Reading FC star addresses future amid transfer talk.

Reading custodian Joel Pereira has reiterated that he is ‘physically and intellectually’ committed to the football club, despite reports connecting him with a move this month. The 28-year-old relocated to Berkshire last summer and has made 33 appearances for the club since replacing David Button as first choice midway through last season. The Portuguese stopper has spent the majority of his career as a number two, and he has played more for the Royals than any other team. The Manchester United teenager is popular among supporters and has five clean sheets this season. As the ownership problem persists, fears exist both within and outside that the club may be forced to sell players this month in order to support operations in the near term.

One of many players out of contract in the summer, this month represents the club’s last chance to earn a fee for Pereira, unless he inks a new contract in the coming months. According to the Mirror, Championship clubs have expressed interest in the custodian, although he ‘may’ stay this month and become a free agent in the summer. Pereira, addressing to the media ahead of Saturday’s 3-1 defeat to Stockport County, insisted that his concentration remains exclusively on the Royals. “I am physically and mentally here,” the custodian stated. “My main concentration is on Reading, and I intend to continue giving my all, as I have since the first day. I am physically and mentally only at Reading Football Club and I’m focussing on Stockport and the next game. I am here.
