Reading FC defender given new opportunity to face twin
After completing a move to Mansfield Town, Reading regular Michael Craig may play his twin brother later this season.
The two progressed through Tottenham Hotspur’s levels, but in 2022, Michael moved to Berkshire from North London.
The 21-year-old, who has made almost 70 appearances for the Royals in previous years, has been a consistent player this season at the odd position of full-back.
The twin Although Matthew has only made one appearance for Spurs, he played for Doncaster Rovers in League Two for a portion of the previous season before moving to Barnsley in the summer.
Playing 16 times for the Tykes, Craig was an unused substitute at Oakwell in November in what was billed as a Battle of the Craig’s- Michael starting for Ruben Selles’ Royals.
Manager Clough said: “Matthew is a central midfield player who we’ve had our eye on for some time. “It’ll be good to strengthen in that area, bearing in mind all the games we have in the second half of the season.
“The one position we haven’t got competition for is Louis Reed and Matthew provides us with that.
“He’s a similar player to Reedy; a good passer of the ball who competes. “He can play in any one of the three midfield positions and has some experience in League One this season with Barnsley.”
Reading squeezed past the Stags 2-1 on December 29, with Noel Hunt’s side making the return trip to the One Call Stadium on April 21.
Reading last visited Mansfield in 1992, drawing 1-1 in Division Three.
