Johannes Hoff Thorup is tipping Lucien Mahovo for a big role in his Norwich City revolution.
The teenager appeared to enjoy his senior debut in the 2-0 Championship defeat at Sheffield United, after a slew of injuries propelled him into the first squad.
Thorup is a big fan of the 19-year-old, who just signed a new long-term contract that may keep him at Carrow Road until 2029, just six months after joining from Notts County.
However, the Dane also wants to dampen any increasing excitement over Mahovo.
“I like him.” He’s really composed on the ball. And he also has this eagerness to move forward, to generate openings and chances,” Thorup remarked. “Within those 25 minutes, you could tell he really wanted to go forward. He wanted to provide some crossing opportunities.
“He had one good cross from the side, and all we needed was for the player in the box to get there first. So far, I like his approach and attitude.I won’t have too high expectations for him because he’s still very, very young, and he needs to adjust to this league, which will probably take some time, so there will be mistakes along the way, but I believe he’s a player for the future.”
Mahovo played non-league football for Boston United last season, but he has the ideal role model in Kellen Fisher, who left Bromley for the Canaries in 2023 and solved Thorup’s central midfield SOS at Bramall Lane.
“He did really well. I believe there were both difficult and positive moments for him,” remarked City’s head coach. “For a young player to simply move into a midfield position away from home in this league is always difficult. But I believe he performed precisely as expected in such a game.
“I think he and Kenny (McLean) did a good job of finding the right spaces and rhythm in the game, sometimes slowing it down and sometimes accelerating it.” That aspect of the game was fine.”
