Southampton Close to First Ivan Juric Signing With Medical Underway

A physical is currently being conducted for the Danish star to move to the south coast Premier League team, and a

move for Rennes player Albert Gronbaek is reportedly getting closer to completion. Southampton is expected to

make their first acquisition of the January transfer window.

In their first 22 Premier League games this season, Southampton has only managed six points, lost eighteen of

them, and only won once, defeating Everton late in November.

Their team is obviously not good enough to compete in the real world, and if they want to have a chance of at least

putting some pressure on the other teams in the bottom five, they will need to make some additions. They are

presently ten points below Ipswich Town and Wolverhampton Wanderers, who are in last position, and it looks

like they have taken proactive measures by making a move for Gronbaek.

According to journalist Loic Tanzi of L’Equipe, a medical is being conducted that would allow Gronbaek to join St.

Mary’s on loan. Should the Saints administration choose to activate the medical, Gronbaek could make the move

permanent by paying €15 million (£12.6 million) at the end of his contract.

Gronbaek’s departure from Rennes is now “expected,” according to a report published on Sunday by the French

publication L’Equipe. The midfielder is expected to sign with Ivan Juric’s team as his first acquisition in the

coming days, and after there was hope that a deal could be reached in recent days, Rennes and Southampton have

reached an agreement in principle.

After going to Norway from his home team, AGF Aarhus, Gronbaek quickly rose to prominence at Bodo/Glimt. In

July, after a strong stint in the Arctic Circle, which included an 18-goal haul from midfield in the 2023 campaign,

Rennes jumped to sign him to a five-year contract.

In 15 Ligue 1 games for the Brittany-based team, the six-time Denmark captain has scored twice this season.

However, he was permitted to go on loan, and Southampton will be hoping that he can duplicate his performance

in Norway to offer them a slim chance of surviving.
