“Not a glamorous”team”—reaction given as Michael Helik swaps Huddersfield Town for Oxford United
Michal Helik, a defender for Huddersfield Town, has left the team to play for Oxford United in the Championship.
Helik signed a two-and-a-half-year contract at Kassam Stadium after completing his move to Oxford on Friday night,
according to Football Insider.
Although he was a member of the team that was relegated from the Championship the previous season, Helik had an
outstanding season on an individual basis, scoring nine goals in 42 games after joining Huddersfield from Barnsley
in the summer of 2022.
Helik has now returned to the Championship with Oxford, and his departure is a major blow to Huddersfield, who
currently sit fourth in the table, just four points from the automatic promotion places. Many had anticipated that
Helik would leave John Smith’s Stadium in the summer, but he stayed with the team and played a crucial role for
Michael Duff’s team in League One in the first half of this season, scoring two goals in 21 appearances and captaining
the team multiple times.

Huddersfield Town fan pundit reacts to Michal Helik’s Oxford United move
When asked about Helik’s departure, Gary Rayner, a fan commentator for FLW’s Huddersfield Town, stated that although Oxford is not the biggest team in the Championship, he can see why the 29-year-old is eager to move to the Kassam Stadium.
“I sort of understand Michal Helik’s move to Oxford, they seem to have picked up under Gary Rowett and potentially look like they’ll stay up,” remarked Graeme.
“He’s a Championship quality defender who wants to play in the Championship.
“Oxford, on the face of it, are not a glamorous team, but then neither are Huddersfield.
“Good luck to him, he’s served us well and he deserves the right to play at the level that his talents justify.
“Even though I would have expected that some teams higher up the Championship table would have been considering him, if he’s getting a good deal there, supporting his family with a respectable salary, and he’s sure he can keep them from going down, then why not? The city of Oxford is pleasant.
“What kind of fee would satisfy me? I don’t know.
“If he had been under contract for a respectable amount of time and we hadn’t been demoted last year, I’d be estimating £3–4 million.
“But we got relegated last year and he’s only under contract for 18 months, so if we get £1 million for him, I’ll be happy.”
Michal Helik exit is a huge blow for Huddersfield Town
Having conceded just 19 league goals this season, Huddersfield have one of the best defensive records in League One,
and Helik has been a big part of that solidity, so there is no doubt he is a huge loss for the Terriers.
Although Helik might have been able to secure a more desirable move than Oxford, the U’s appear likely to stay in the Championship this season under new manager Gary Rowett, and should they survive, they will have aspirations
to climb the table over the coming years. Town’s fantastic play in recent months as they approach the automatic
promotion spots means that Helik’s departure is unlikely to ruin their season, and owner Kevin Nagle may be eager
to balance the books after spending heavily this week on the signings of Joe Taylor and Dion Charles.
