FOOTBALL – Thomas-Asante nets winner as Coventry City edge out Bristol City
BRANDON Thomas-Asante scored his first goal since October as Coventry City battled to a 1-0 home win against Bristol City.
Thomas-Asante scored the game’s only goal on 62 minutes as the Sky Blues returned to winning ways at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
The forward was the subject of a bid from Blackburn Rovers, according to Sky Sports, but proved his worth to Frank Lampard’s side by netting the winner against the Robins.
And the result means Coventry sit 14th in the Championship table, six points clear of the relegation zone.
The Robins spurned a glorious chance to break the deadlock when Anis Mehmeti released Nahki Wells in-behind the City defence only for Oliver Dovin to make a superb save diving low to his left.
At the other end, Liam Kitching burst down the left before picking out Milan van Ewijk in space as the full-back dragged a shot wide of the target from just inside the penalty area.
City wasted another opening after the break when Ellis Simms crossed for Jack Rudoni only for the latter to miss his kick from eight-yards out.
The home side continued to search for an opener as Kitching flicked on Jamie Allen’s high ball into the path of Simms who fired a first time shot wide.
Lampard’s men remained on top in the second period as Robins goalkeeper Max O’Leary pushed Rudoni’s powerful effort from distance behind for a corner.
However, the Sky Blues eventually took the lead just past the hour mark when Rudoni slipped in Thomas-Asante down the right-hand side of the penalty area and the latter lashed an unstoppable shot past O’Leary via the underside of the crossbar.
The visitors went in search of equaliser as Dovin made another crucial save to keep out substitute Sam Bell’s effort with his feet.
Coventry are next in action against Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday, January 21 with kick-off at 7.45pm at Ewood Park.
