Michael Smith’s Sheffield Wednesday future has been pushed into further speculation after he sat out their second match on the spin.
The Star reported last week that League One promotion contenders Wrexham had revived their interest in the forward after seeking to sign him in the summer. A formal transfer approach is likely during this transfer window, and other teams are thought to be interested.
Smith has shown to be a successful option for the Owls this season, scoring five goals and adding six assists in a season in which he has often been utilized as a substitute. The chances of a transfer is unknown, but he has missed Danny Röhl’s last two squads, the FA Cup loss to Coventry City last week and the defeat to Leeds United on Sunday.
Smith has only been left out of two matchday squads this season, with the exception of an August Carabao Cup match against Grimsby Town. His two-and-a-half year stint at S6 has resulted in 29 goals and 14 assists in 111 appearances. Smith, now 33, is expected to be out of contract at the end of the season. Röhl declined to comment on the situation.
The questions come as the Owls prepare for an important week. Following weeks of back-and-forth over Röhl’s relationship with Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri, the German coach confirmed the two would meet for important discussions as the transfer window progressed. Wednesday has identified targets and negotiated deals, but the club has yet to move forward with formal discussions.
