Ampadu Exclusive: Leeds star accused of cheating after Sheffield Weds incident
As Leeds defeated Sheffield Wednesday 3-0 in the Championship on Sunday, Keith Hackett accused Ethan Ampadu
of ‘cheating’. On January 19, Daniel Farke’s team easily won the all-Yorkshire derby at Elland Road, with goals from
Manor Solomon, Largie Ramazani, and Ao Tanaka.
The Whites have regained their league-leading position after defeating the Owls, surpassing Sheffield United to take
a one-point lead after 27 games.
But there was some controversy around the match against Wednesday.
Shea Charles, a standout for the Owls, was given a penalty for charging into Ampadu, 24, during the second half.
While Charles did go in a bit strong on the Wales international, he didn’t make contact with his legs at all.
However, Ampadu went down clutching his shin as though he’d been kicked there.
Ampadu makes meal of incident in Leeds v Sheffield Wednesday
According to Hackett, a former Premier League and FIFA referee and Sheffield Wednesday supporter, Ampadu was
fabricating an injury during the Yorkshire derby match, something that Norman Hunter and Billie Bremner would
be embarrassed of.
Hackett told MOT Leeds News, “There is no doubt that the feigning of injury from robust challenges is a plague in
the modern game.”
These happened and were a part of the game in my time.
Players would help the opponent get off the ground by extending their arms.
“Years ago, there was more physicality and less cheating; Vince Jones, Norman Hunter, and Billy Bremner come to mind.”
This season, Ampadu has made 16 appearances for Leeds in all competitions.
He participated in the entire ninety minutes of the Yorkshire derby victory over the Owls.
