Alex Revell said Stevenage should have drawn “as a minimum” in the 2-1 loss at home to Wigan Athletic – only to be denied by a stunning free-kick from Thelo Aasgaard.
The Latics took the lead 10 minutes into the second half, but Dan Kemp equalised on 83.
Jensen Weir of Wigan received a straight red card for a nasty trip nine minutes earlier.
However, Stevenage would also end up with ten men as Louis Thompson received a second yellow card and We should have drawn as a minimum – Stevengave away a free kick, which the in-form Aasgaard curled into the top corner five minutes into stoppage time.
“But when we equalized, it appeared like only one team was going to win it.
“But their winning goal is just a lack of organization, and it is something we have to learn very fast because you don’t lose that game, you win it, or at the very least you come away with a tie.
“It all comes down to making a decision in the end. We lost our composure.
“The winner is a sucker punch, but even after that, we had an opportunity to cross the ball and outperformed everyone.
“We just lacked quality in certain areas and we got punished.”
The manager sympathized with Thompson’s departure but pointed the finger of blame farther up the pitch, criticizing both goals allowed.
He remarked, “We tried to play a diagonal, but it was cut out, and now we’re way too exposed.
“I believe Louis takes a choice because he believes Taylor is in on goal but was unaware Dan Sweeney was present.
“But if you give a free kick away in that situation to someone in form like Aasgaard, he’ll score.
“Both goals were clearly avoidable, and we could have handled them better.
“Then we went backwards too often when we had the chance to play forward and run forward.
“That isn’t us so we have to make sure we learn from that.”
Opposite number. Shaun Maloney praised his match-winner’s contribution, and not just for the goal.
The Wigan manager stated, “This is a massive win for us, really big.”
“We had to dig in when we were down to ten men, but they scored and had all the momentum.
“But Thelo delivers another fantastic moment.
“The goal is fantastic, but the way he played when we were down to ten men was perhaps the most amazing aspect for me.
“He advanced to the next level and has emerged as a true leader for our team.
“When we were down to ten, the ball always found him. He was holding it aloft and attempting to defeat the players.
“He was fantastic in the second half.
“But the rest of the team was great as well; I really enjoyed us in the second half until we were sent off.
“That was down to the players, they knew what we had to do and they showed lots of bravery.”
