Norwich City can no longer be viewed as the winners of £12m Newcastle United deal
It’s easy to forget that Muprhy is only 29 years old because he plays for Newcastle United and is a consistent member of Eddie Howe’s team, not just a bit player. This is mainly because he made his Canaries debut in 2014. One peculiarity of his rise at Carrow Road was that he made his debut concurrently with his twin brother Josh, who continues to play at a high level and plays for Portsmouth in the Championship.
Although it hasn’t always been that way, Jacob has had the better career of the two. He spent a significant portion of his early career hopping around on loan with Norwich, and he has even had stints on loan with other clubs while at Newcastle.Nevertheless, Newcastle had had enough of his stay in Norwich to pay an estimated £12 million to send him to Tyneside in 2017, which is still one of the largest transfer fees Norwich City has ever received.
Jacob Murphy’s career at Newcastle United had a turbulent beginning.
It would probably be an understatement to say that Muprhy’s Newcastle career got off to a turbulent start because he found it difficult to transition from the Championship to the Premier League. Muprhy finished 2016–17 with 16 goal involvements for the Canaries, but he only managed two goals in his first season in the North East, and he also struggled in the first half of the 18–19 season. He played very little during his second half of the season on loan at West Brom in the second division, but the following season, he created a name for himself by helping to score 15 goals while playing for Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship.
Many Newcastle supporters at the time thought that was the confidence boost he needed to realize his full potential in the top division, but after he returned, more setbacks on Tyneside must have left them wondering what had gone wrong. At that point, Norwich City appeared to be the true winners of this transaction, and the £12 million they had recovered appeared to have been a brilliant move on the part of the Canaries board, in part because the proceeds from his sale had made it possible for a number of players to join, who were later crucial to Norwich’s promotion.
The arrival of Eddie Howe gave Jacob Murphy a lifeline for Newcastle United.
At that time, Murphy’s future at Newcastle appeared grim, but Eddie Howe’s arrival in the middle of the 21–22 season turned things around for the winger, even though he had to wait a little while to see the full benefits. Under Howe, Murphy has steadily improved each season to the point that he is now a regular in the first team and one of the first names on the teamsheet each week. Over the past three years, he has made incredible progress as a football player, and he is on track to have his best-ever Premier League season in terms of goal contributions.
The fact that Newcastle, one of the wealthiest teams in the world, has never gone out and acquired a top-tier winger to replace Murphy—in Howe’s opinion, they already have one—is the clearest indication of how much they regard Murphy. Newcastle would need to spend around £40 million to get a player who might have the same influence as Murphy right now, thus their £12 million investment from 2017 has ultimately paid off, and they must be seen as the deal’s biggest winners.
