Inside ‘legendary’ old Huddersfield pub stripped out as search goes on

It appears that a former bar, renowned for its authentic ale and assortment of antiques, is ready for a new tenant.

The Slubbers Arms on Halifax Old Road, Hillhouse, Huddersfield, was purchased by a real estate developer in 2022

after the landlord, Bill Brogan, passed away in 2020. Lately, it has been removed. Meanwhile, as they look for a new

use, Whitegates has posted ‘To Let’ signs.

Displays of vintage rail tickets, clocking-in cards, and an ancient pub cistern bearing the inscription “In memory of

the Slubbers’ Loos 1952-1992″ were all part of the eccentric establishment. The tavern, which served Timothy

Taylors, was a frequent destination for students, real ale lovers, and supporters of Huddersfield Town.

The late David Green and his wife Lynda operated it for over 14 years, from 1982 to 1996, when it was at its peak.

Frederick Bullock, a former Huddersfield Town captain who had later served in the Great War and had injuries,

operated the tavern in the 1920s. Bullock and his wife, Maude, had operated the Slubbers.

In November 1922, tragedy struck when Maude returned downstairs to find her 36-year-old husband had passed

out. Maude had used the beer bottle next to him to store ammonia. He managed to say, “Ammonia,” when Maude

spoke. A huge error! A huge error!
