Callum Robinson scored twice in the opening six minutes of the second half, and Dimitrios Goutas added gloss to the scoreline, moving Cardiff two points clear of the relegation zone. Some fans had marched to the stadium in protest before the game, but a lively derby atmosphere greeted the sides in a tense first half. However, Cardiff was on the rise after that. Robinson scored just 73 seconds after the half and took advantage of some sloppy Swansea defending to complete his brace with a tidy finish soon after.
Goutas sealed the victory with a thundering header from a corner in the 67th minute, as Cardiff won consecutive home derbies against the Swans for the first time since December 1985. Hull City also gave itself hope of remaining in the Championship next season with a 1-0 victory over Millwall, lifting it out of the relegation zone. There wasn’t much goalmouth action at The Den, but the Tigers took advantage of an unlucky Jake Cooper own goal, as Regan Slater’s low right-sided cross deflected off the defender and past Lukas Jensen as he attempted to stop it from reaching Joao Pedro.
Hull improved to 21st place, one point ahead of Luton Town, after their second away win in a row. Bottom-of-the-table Plymouth Argyle, however, squandered a chance to tighten the gap on the teams above them by losing 1-0 to Queens Park Rangers. Dan Grimshaw made several excellent saves to keep Plymouth Argyle in the game despite QPR’s pressing, before Rayan Kolli scored in the 65th minute to seal the victory. It was Miron Muslic’s first defeat at the Pilgrims, and QPR’s third consecutive win lifted them into the top half of the Championship standings for the first time in nearly two years.
