Sheffield Wednesday lining Southampton target to replace Shea Charles

Championship side Sheffield Wednesday is lining up a move for young talent Freddy Jeffreys to replace Saints prodigy Shea Charles.

In recent years, Southampton FC has relied heavily on its young players. That is also why the Saints often place a high value on potential talent.
Southampton committed £10.5 million in Shea Charles, a Manchester City prodigy. Charles, on the other hand, struggled to adjust to his new surroundings and was loaned out to Sheffield Wednesday the following year.

And guess what? He’s already established himself as a crucial player for Sheffield Wednesday under Danny Röhl. To the point that Southampton’s decision to recall Charles from his loan stay has caused mayhem for Röhl’s team.

In a media interview (via The Star), Röhl stated: “I must confess that I am very unhappy. I spoke with Shea, and I highly recommend him because of how he’s grown and improved. “He’s an important player for us.”

Clearly, Charles’ departure might leave a significant vacuum for Röhl’s Sheffield side, who believe the 21-year-old has a bright future ahead.

But what is even more interesting is that the club has begun preparing a move for a former Saints target to replace Shea Charles.

According to The Star, the Championship club has invited Freddy Jeffreys, who was previously linked with Southampton, to a trial.

After winning the U-19 EFL Youth Alliance, Jeffreys was linked with a move to Southampton in June 2022, but nothing was confirmed.

However, the Bradford star now has another opportunity to go up from League Two to the Championship.

Clearly, Jeffreys has enormous promise, as evidenced by his side’s dominance over Manchester City’s youth in the EFL Trophy 2023. The only question is if he can convince the selectors enough to earn a contract here.

If things go well, Jeffreys, like Shea Charles, could break into Sheffield’s first team. Who knows if Southampton will renew their interest in him in the future, creating a story similar to Tyler Dibling’s rise at the club.
