Corporation Park conservatory, Blackburn
Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council is recruiting an architect for the conservation and repair of its crumbling
Victorian conservatory in Corporation Park [Deadline: 16 December 2024]
The winning firm selected for the estimated £136,800 contract will put up a rehabilitation plan for the Grade II-
listed cast iron frame-structure which was initially erected as a ‘grand and unique’ monument in the early 1900s but
partially collapsed five years ago.
The project’s goal is to repair the elaborately decorated building, which is situated on a plinth constructed of stone
and brick and has been secured by timber propping after its west wing collapsed in 2019. Delivering a “sympathetic
and sustainable” repair that permits future usage of the structure is one of the project’s main goals.
The project’s goal is to fully comprehend the conservatory’s significance and state, as well as to develop a set of
guiding principles for its restoration, according to the brief.
“In order to enable public consultation to follow this piece of work, this will involve creating costed high level
concept designs for future uses in collaboration with stakeholders.”
“It will be crucial to consider sustainability and ways to repurpose the building in a way that supports the council’s
net zero goals.”
About 34 kilometres north of Manchester is the town of Blackburn, which was once a textile industry hub. With a
population of about 100,000, the town is halfway through Sanderson Borland’s ambitious £34 million regeneration
masterplan.
Purcell’s £8 million addition to the Grade II*-listed Blackburn Cathedral is one of the recent local developments. In
2021, Blackburn and the Darwen Borough Council began looking for an architect to renovate and modernise the
dilapidated, Grade II-listed Church of St. John the Evangelist.
