After Jason Wilcox left for Manchester United, Southampton is getting close to hiring a new sporting director.
According to Mail Sport, one of the candidates being given significant consideration for the head coaching position with St Mary’s is Johannes Spors, who was connected to the Newcastle sporting director position in the summer.
The process of replacing the now-United executive has been going on since Wilcox left Southampton in April to assume a position at Old Trafford as technical director.
According to reports, the pursuit is coming to an end, and the Premier League team hopes to schedule an appointment shortly.
Among the applicants was Spors, the global sporting director for the 777 Group, which owns shares in Genoa, Sevilla, Standard Liege, and Vasco De Gama.
He is one of the top contenders for the position, according to sources.
Wolves sporting director Matt Hobbs has also held talks over the position, but the Molineux chief appears set to stay in the Midlands.
Saints owner Dragan Solak announced this week that a new footballing management appointment would be made after chairman Henrik Kraft stepped down.
