Sky Sports: Player Rangers sold for just £500k now labelled ‘one of the most talented in the league’
The good news for Philippe Clement is that, if Rangers are to have a successful end to the 2024/25 season, Ibrox has a handful of players willing to take on a talisman role.
Hamza Igamane continued his incredible run of success against St Johnstone, scoring his eighth goal in just 11 Scottish Premiership games. Meanwhile, former Eredivisie sparring rivals Vaclav Cerny and Danilo are back on track in the final third, while CEO Patrick Stewart anticipates big things from Nedim Bajrami and Jefte in 2025. Rangers may have left themselves with much too much to do in the championship battle, losing their footing on the slickest of slopes as Celtic prepare to slam their green-and-white flag into the peak, but with the Scottish Cup and the Europa League on the line, all is not lost at Ibrox just yet.
South of the border, meanwhile, a player who left Glasgow and returned to England over the summer could also be the difference between a disappointing second half and a successful one.
Todd Cantwell backed to spark Blackburn promotion push after Rangers exit
A run of five Championship games without a win may have dashed Blackburn Rovers’ promotion aspirations, but as long as Todd Cantwell is at Ewood Park, John Eustace’s side can never be written off. At least, it is the opinion of EFL expert George Elek. Despite a troubling run leading up to New Year’s Day, Blackburn remain seventh, just two points behind fifth-place Middlesbrough. And, while Cantwell has only one goal and three assists in 20 games, Elek would not be surprised if a player who has previously dominated at this level with Norwich City became the trigger for a spirited play-off push.
“I’m worried they don’t have the firepower to do this,” Elek thinks, with Blackburn the lowest scorers in the Championship’s top half, with only 28 goals from 25 games. “But I believe Todd Cantwell is one of the league’s most skilled players, and he appears to be developing week after week. [Cantwell] is one of the best creative players, as well as a high-scoring danger. “It wouldn’t surprise me at all of Cantwell is the main man for a side who are going to have a very good second half of the season.”
Rovers boss John Eustace labels Cantwell an ‘outstanding talent’
Philippe Clement suggested that Todd Cantwell’s departure from the Rangers was due to homesickness. Over the summer, he crossed Hadrian’s Wall again for a cut-price fee of £500,000, with Ewood Park becoming Cantwell’s ‘home’ in the same way that Ibrox never was.
