Now that they have moved into fourth spot in the Premier League following their comfortable three-goal win over Wolves in midweek, Newcastle United are very realistic contenders to qualify for the Champions League next season. To keep the momentum going, it’s Eddie Howe’s former club Bournemouth who are up next when they travel to St. James’ Park for Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off. An impressive tenth successive win is the target for the Magpies. Here’s our Newcastle United predicted lineup.
How Newcastle United Have Lined Up Recently
It’s getting to the stage where predicting the Newcastle United lineup over the last few weeks has been straightforward. Barring any serious injuries, Martin Dubravka is the undisputed number one given that Nick Pope remains out. Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall have been terrific in their full back roles, defending very well and getting forward at every opportunity.
A big part of Newcastle’s success in their nine-game winning run is the fact that only three goals have been conceded in that time. It’s Dan Burn and one other in the centre of defence and, after seven seasons as a regular in the heart of the Newcastle United defence, Fabian Schar now has a serious competitor for his jersey in fit-again Sven Botman.
The blend of qualities in Newcastle United’s midfield is exceptional and are as good as any midfield trio in the Premier League. The combination of Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton and Sandro Tonali offers the running power, skill, and ability to play key passes in the last third of the pitch that you need to succeed at the top end of the table.
The most recent example of this were the two killer passes played by captain Bruno Guimaraes into the path of Alexander Isak for the opening two goals of the clash with Wolves. Constantly feeding the in-form striker with good service into his feet can keep the Magpies on this winning run. Isak also picks up plenty of possession in and around the penalty box from Anthony Gordon and the impressive Jacob Murphy. Both Gordon and Murphy have proven to be so important to the team’s success by chipping in with valuable goals themselves.
Newcastle United Recent Form and Tactics
Quite simply, Newcastle United are the form team in the Premier League with their top striker Alexander Isak in the form of his life. Their 4-3-3 approach with the ball and 4-5-1 shape out of possession is working well for Eddie Howe. It’s a team that work extremely hard for each other and as soon as they win the ball back, the man in possession will have several passing options. Bournemouth are also a club enjoying good form and have ambitions of qualifying for Europe, so a close game is expected.
Newcastle United Injuries to Consider
Eddie Howe has indicated that Harvey Barnes will be out for at least a month with a thigh injury. It’s a real blow for the wide man who has struggled for momentum in the side this season. Fabian Schar missed the victory over Wolves due to illness but should be available for this one. Jamaal Lascelles, Callum Wilson, Emil Krafth and especially Nick Pope are edging back to full fitness.
