Leeds can do better than Iheanacho, and this won’t be a deal worth exploring

Leeds United is reportedly in the running for Kelechi Iheanacho, a striker for Sevilla who was signed by Victor Orta

after leaving Leicester City, the champions of the previous season.

Leeds’ January transfer window objectives seem to be at the top end of the pitch, which includes a new striker,

attacking midfielder or both, despite the current widespread demand for a new custodian.

The team expects a “quiet” window to pass in January, but Daniel Farke has stated that they will be aware of any

opportunities that may arise later in the month.

Leeds United ‘interested’ in signing Sevilla’s Kelechi Iheanacho

Leeds has reportedly expressed interest in signing Sevilla striker Kelechi Iheanacho before the transfer window

closes, according to Football Insider. The Nigerian international joined Victor Orta’s La Liga team after leaving

Leicester City on a free transfer with a Championship winner’s medal in the summer, but he has since been one of

several new arrivals at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez-Pijuan to fail to make an impression, drawing harsh criticism

from Leeds’ former director of football.

The 28-year-old has reportedly been made available for transfer, and Leeds has contacted Sevilla about perhaps

signing him this January.

Iheanacho hasn’t had much playing time in La Liga, making nine appearances (5 starts) for a total of 401 minutes,

although he hasn’t scored or assisted on a goal.

In 23 appearances during the Championship last season, he managed five goals and one assist; his final goal was in October 2023.

Leeds can do better than Iheanacho, and this won’t be a deal worth exploring

Iheanacho at the early stages of last season was a brilliant option for Leicester, but having missed large parts of the

business end of that campaign, and then being bit-part for Sevilla, it makes little sense to sign him now.

He’d need time to get up to speed to be worth while in our team under Farke, and that patience is something we

simply can’t afford a new signing.

If you were guaranteed to get the levels of goalscoring he showed three or four years ago, then this would absolutely

be a good signing, but to find his last prolific stretch of form, you’re going all the way back to when Patrick Bamford

was also banging them in during the 20/21 season – a long time ago.

This is what Farke means when he pinpoints the struggles to find the right quality in January, typically the players

that are available are out of form, or overvalued, or both.
