Devastating blaze at Coventry Stadium being treated as ‘arson’
Police are investigating the alleged arson attack at the stadium on Rugby Road
The fire that broke out at Coventry Stadium was an alleged arson attack, according to police confirmation. At approximately 7 p.m. on Friday, May 13, firefighters hurried to put out the fire on Rugby Road in Brandon.
According to Robert Allen, assistant chief fire officer for Warwickshire Fire and Rescue, “lots of hard work” was required to stop the fire from “escalating.” Since this is the second fire at the stadium in as many months, locals said they are growing more and more alarmed.
The last time crews responded to a fire at the old Coventry Bees speedway team’s home was in February. In the past, a Brandon Estates representative stated that they are “aware” of trespassing on the property and are “closely” collaborating with security consultants to “secure” it.
Bosses say they are liaising with ‘relevant local stakeholders’ and have urged people to stay out of the site ‘for their own safety.’ It was also said that they do not believe reopening the stadium for speedway and stock car racing would be ‘financially viable.’
A spokesman for Warwickshire Police said: “Incident on Rugby Road is being treated as arson. Officers attended to put road closures in place.
“Anyone with information that could help with enquiries should call 101 quoting incident 382 of 13 May. Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
