Deal close: Middlesbrough now in advanced talks to sign “exciting” new £35k-p/w ace

Middlesbrough have received some much-needed good news in the January transfer market, with a report revealing that they are closing in on a new signing for Michael Carrick.

There is a lot of ambiguity about which players Carrick will still have available for the second half of the Championship season, owing to widespread chatter on Teeside.

Ben Doak’s future with the Riverside outfit has been called into question after bids for the Liverpool talent were lodged this month, with speculation circulating that Arne Slot’s side will try to use him as part of a part exchange deal to sign Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo before the end of the window.

Elsewhere, there has been much talk about the future of Boro’s leading striker, Emmanuel Latte Lath, who has 10 goals this season but is apparently being pursued by MLS club Atlanta United for £16 million.

The Ivorian is also reported to be on the radar of Premier League strugglers Ipswich Town, who wanted to buy him in the summer and have renewed their interest now.

Emmanuel Latte-Lath 10
Finn Azaz 8
Tommy Conway 8
Hayden Hackney 3
Ben Doak 2

Any elimination would be a huge blow to Boro’s chances of making the play-offs, as the team is now in the final slot but only a point clear of West Brom.

If their attacking potential is lost this winter, they will need to rebuild their squad significantly in the last weeks of the season in order to compete for a play-off berth, but they are already closing in on a signing at the other end of the pitch.

Middlesbrough are closing in on signing Ryan Giles.

This comes as Football League World reports that Boro are in “advanced talks” to sign Ryan Giles from Hull City, barely six months after his arrival at the MKM Stadium.

The left-back was bought from Luton Town in the summer, but he has battled to establish himself in the Hull side, starting only 11 games this season and being an unused substitute nine times.

His brief spell with Hull appears to be nearing to an end, with a deal to make him Michael Carrick’s first January signing “edging closer to completion” and “the two sides are both now expecting the deal to go through at some stage this month”.

Coming through the ranks at Wolves, and during a loan period with Cardiff, he was singled out for praise by Mick McCarthy, who explained: “Ryan is exciting, and the crosses he puts in, whether they’re on the right, left-footed, corners, free-kicks, it’s a real weapon we can use.”

Giles’ finest form of his career came during his loan stay on Teeside, when he assisted 12 goals to help Boro reach the play-off semi-finals in 2023, but he has yet to match that level since.

Hull City will benefit from his departure as well, as his £35,000 per week wages are reported to be the highest at the club, however the sum they will receive for the defender is unknown at this time. Carrick will be hopeful that this is the first of numerous signings in the coming weeks to help his side remain in contention for the play-offs.
