Rangers title winner could join Cantwell at Blackburn Rovers as checks made on star amid ‘doubly attractive’ alternative
Rangers can increase their numbers now that the January transfer window is open.
The Sun claims that Blackburn Rovers are “checking a move” for Ryan Kent, a former Rangers winger. According to
the source, Jeffrey Schlupp of Crystal Palace is also a target for a loan move from John Eustace’s team.
The Lancashire team is aiming for promotion to the Premier League and currently sits in seventh place in the
Championship standings. After losing to rivals Burnley at home this weekend, they are now one point out of the
playoffs.
Blackburn landed ex-Rangers playmaker Todd Cantwell in the summer and are now being linked with Kent, who has
been a free agent since leaving Fenerbahce after an ill-fated 16 months in Turkey.
Journalist Alan Nixon has written on his Patreon page: “Blackburn are also checking a move for free agent Ryan
Kent in the same position but Schlupp can play left-back as well, making him doubly attractive.”
Between 2019 and 2023, Kent played 218 games for Ibrox, scoring 33 goals. In order to join Fenerbahce in Turkey,
he severed his links with the Glasgow team. “Thank you to all the Rangers fans,” he posted on social media at the
time. For the rest of my life, I shall remember my time at Ibrox. I want to express my gratitude to all of my
teammates, management team, and backroom employees, both past and current. I will miss you all.
“It’s now time for me to start a thrilling new chapter in my career and play football somewhere else.” But Rangers
will always hold a special place in my heart. I’m excited to support you as you achieve your goals.
The forward rose up through the ranks at Liverpool and was loaned out to Coventry City, Barnsley, Freiburg and
Bristol City to get some experience under his belt away from Anfield. He is a free agent at the moment and continues
to weigh up his options amid links to Blackburn.
If they were to secure his signature, he would give them more competition and depth on the wing. However, the fact
he hasn’t played for a few months may mean it takes a while for him to get back up to speed.
Blackburn Rovers eyeing Premier League swoop
Schlupp is also being pursued by Rovers, who want to increase their numbers. He joined Crystal Palace in 2017 and
has been a valuable member of the Eagles ever since.
“In addition to playing a crucial role on the pitch, Will, Jeff, and Joel are natural leaders in the dressing room who
embody the Crystal Palace DNA and who help set a culture of the highest standards at the training ground,” stated
their chairman at the time, Steve Parish, when he was given a new one-year contract in the summer along with Will
Hughes and Joel Ward.
“We are delighted that they will be with us next season to help further our exciting early progress under Oliver
Glasner. The club is also in discussions with Nathaniel Clyne and Remi Matthews about extending their stays at the
club.”
