Hundreds of new parking spaces planned for National Memorial Arboretum

PARKING at the National Memorial Arboretum could be set to increase if plans are approved.

The national centre for remembrance is hoping to replace the current temporary facility on the Alrewas Quarry with a permanent car park for more than 900 vehicles and 18 coaches.

It would would be located immediately south of the main entrance to the arboretum.

The joint planning application was submitted by Tarmac, which controls the land where the car park is set to be located, and the National Memorial Arboretum.

A planning statement said:

“It is proposed to establish and operate three new points of access to and from the proposed car park to and from Croxall Road.

“The proposals also include for a pedestrian crossing over Croxall Road to provide a safe and suitable means of access between the proposed car park and the National Memorial Arboretum.

“The surface treatments enable the car park to be zoned for ease of management.

“The expectation is that the area surfaced in asphalt will be suitable to accommodate the needs of the National Memorial Arboretum most of the year. On around 100 occasions per year the exception is that the demand for car parking will cover the asphalt and permeable paving area.

“On around 30 occasions per year the exception is that the demand for car parking will cover all areas. This is for special events such as Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day.”
