Norwich City have been advised to exercise caution in their pursuit of Peterborough United attacker Ricky-Jade Jones, who is reportedly a target for Johannes Hoff Thorup this month.
The Canaries are now in play-off contention and sit tenth in the Championship after 26 games, just three points behind sixth-placed West Bromwich Albion.
It’s unclear where Norwich will finish the season, as inconsistency has been a major concern for Thorup’s team this season.
However, despite having the division’s second-best goals per match return of 1.7, Norwich are in need of fresh attacking energy, with top scorer Borja Sainz likely to miss the next six matches due to suspension, and they appear to be exploring a move for Jones in response.
Norwich City is interested in signing Ricky-Jade Jones from Peterborough United.
According to Darren Witcoop, Norwich have opened an enquiry for the speedy forward, who is in high demand.
Norwich are regarded as the “latest club” to make a bid after Cardiff City’s proposal was rejected, with Football League World first reporting the Bluebirds’ interest in the 22-year-old.
Jones is also thought to be interested in moving abroad, with Bundesliga club Freiburg rumoured to be interested, while Middlesbrough are apparently keeping an eye on him but will only pursue a deal if top scorer Emmanuel Latte Lath leaves the Riverside Stadium this month, despite strong interest.
His long-term future at Peterborough, however, remains uncertain as he enters the final six months of his contract, though the club will be able to collect a hefty, tribunal-determined price for the forward due to his age if he departs as a free agent.
The Posh forward, who can play as a striker or winger, is the world’s fastest footballer in 2024, beating out Kylian Mbappe and Alphonso Davies. Jones is known for his explosive speed and has been reasonably prolific in front of goal for Posh, scoring 25 goals in all competitions over the last season and a half.
Only six of those have come in league play this season for Peterborough, who are currently only two points above the third-tier relegation zone.
Norwich City cautioned Peterborough United about Ricky-Jade Jones’ transfer interest.
Following the news of Norwich’s interest, FLW asked our resident Canaries fan commentator, Zeke Downes, if a prospective cut-price purchase for Jones is the type of move his club should be trying to make.
Although Zeke is encouraged by Jones’ age and goal return over the last 18 months, and has expressed confidence in the key decision-makers at Carrow Road, he is wary of the significant jump up from League One to the Championship.
“I definitely think that getting a player that’s homegrown will help us,” Zeke said in an interview.
“He’s a wonderful age, but he has a lot of experience and he plays in an attacking position, which is great.
