‘What happened’ – Jose Sa opens up about situation at Wolves that led to Gary O’Neil scolding

Sa, signed from Olympiacos in 2021, was chosen to be the Wolves’ succession to Rui Patricio and has mostly been a reliable goalkeeper.

The Portugal international has had ups and downs at Molineux, and the 2024/25 season will provide new challenges for the goalkeeper.

In December, Sa battled with Wolves fans on the South Bank, but the incident is already a distant memory.

Sa’s performance has improved since Vitor Pereira’s arrival, but he still needs to prove himself to Wolves fans.

Pereira’s confidence in the shot-stopper, who has started every Premier League game since the new manager came, may be a key factor.

Prior to Pereira’s rule, Wolves faced a difficult situation due to Gary O’Neil’s signing of Sam Johnstone in the summer, who temporarily displaced Sa as their number one.

O’Neil was chastised for his treatment of Sa, a story that the Portuguese have now opened up about.

“This season has been challenging for me due to what transpired. “I kept working and believing, and after returning to the team, I’m doing my best to help them,” Sa told Wolves’ official website.

After a scare against O’Neil earlier this season, the 31-year-old emphasized the need of establishing himself in the Wolves team.

“The situation was difficult to manage. We must be strong, work hard, and demonstrate our full potential. Just labor, and once it’s out of our hands, we don’t get to determine who plays. We need to do our best.”

Despite Sa nearly leaving Wolves in the summer, the Old Gold are fortunate to still have the ‘keeper, with Pereira now reaping the dividends.

Pereira has openly lauded Sa’s performances since his arrival, boosting his confidence after a difficult few months.

While Sa has moved on, questions about O’Neil’s choice remain, as it was a tight call as to whether the goalkeeper would leave Molineux.

Bench 4 0
Goals conceded 24 5

During the situation involving the two goalkeepers, journalist Nathan Judah expressed alarm about what the former Wolves manager had caused, calling it a ‘total catastrophe’.

O’Neil’s treatment of Sa resulted in a ‘absolute catastrophe’, but he has since regained confidence owing to Pereira.
