Tragedy on Route 6 in Exeter: Two Teens Killed, 21 Injured in Separate Crashes

Exeter, January 15, 2025 — A devastating sequence of events unfolded on Route 6 in Exeter on Tuesday, resulting in the deaths of two teenagers and injuries to 21 others, including four critically. The crashes occurred within hours of each other, leaving the community reeling from the shocking loss of life and the scale of the casualties.

First Crash: A Fatal Collision

The first crash occurred around 1:30 p.m. near the intersection of Route 6 and Meadow Lane. According to state police, a sedan carrying four teenagers collided head-on with an oncoming SUV after attempting to overtake another vehicle.

Two of the teens in the sedan, aged 16 and 17, were pronounced dead at the scene. The other two passengers, along with the driver of the SUV, sustained severe injuries and were airlifted to nearby hospitals. Police confirmed that all occupants of the sedan were students at Exeter High School.

“We are heartbroken by this tragic loss,” said Principal Karen Matthews. “Counseling services will be available for students and staff in the coming days.”

Second Crash: Pile-Up Adds to the Chaos

As emergency responders worked to clear the first scene, a second crash occurred just five miles away near Oakwood Drive at approximately 6:00 p.m. A 10-car pile-up was triggered when a tractor-trailer failed to brake in time for slowed traffic.

The collision caused a chain reaction involving multiple vehicles, including a school bus carrying 15 passengers. Miraculously, the students on the bus escaped with minor injuries, though the driver sustained critical injuries.

In total, 18 people were transported to local hospitals, four of whom remain in critical condition. Witnesses reported scenes of panic and chaos as rescue workers rushed to extract victims from mangled vehicles.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities are investigating the circumstances leading to both crashes. Preliminary reports suggest that speed, distracted driving, and poor weather conditions may have been contributing factors.

“We urge everyone to exercise extreme caution while driving,” said State Trooper Daniel Harris. “These tragedies remind us how quickly lives can be altered or lost.”

Community Mourns

Exeter residents are mourning the loss of the two teenagers and rallying to support the injured and their families. A candlelight vigil is planned for Thursday evening at Exeter High School to honor the victims.

Anyone with information about the crashes is encouraged to contact the Exeter Police Department.

This tragic day highlights the critical need for increased road safety measures and heightened awareness among drivers. As the community grieves, authorities are working to ensure justice for the victims and to prevent further loss of life.
