Black Cats striker Aaron Connolly is likely to join Championship rivals Millwall.
Striker Aaron Connolly is likely to leave Sunderland to join fellow Championship club Millwall. The frontman’s brief stay on Wearside will come to an end, with the former Brighton & Hove Albion man rumoured to be returning south to join Millwall.
The Lions, now headed by former Sunderland manager Alex Neil, are believed to have agreed to sign the 24-year-old after he struggled to find his feet after joining on a short-term contract in September.
Connolly started only two league games in red and white, scoring one, a stunning volley away at Millwall, but has battled for game time, falling behind Wilson Isidor and Eliezer Mayenda in the pecking order.
Régis Le Bris had intimated that he would approve a move for Connolly this month, and he would go to the capital to join the team now ranked 14th in the Championship standings.
After his first start for Sunderland in November, Connolly commented, “I love it here.” It’s a terrific bunch, and I enjoy the way we play. I can envision myself having a successful season here.
“I was never going to use the excuse that I didn’t have a preseason. I didn’t have one last season at Hull, but I was scoring goals. I know the goals will come; I won’t force them. I am confident in my ability to contribute and score goals.
However, it now appears like he will line up for Championship rivals Millwall, and he might make his Stadium of Light comeback when the Lions travel to the North East on 29 March.
