The Black Cats remain connected with the highly regarded Aston Villa striker.
Sunderland are reportedly one of several Championship teams waiting for Aston Villa’s approval to complete a move for striker Louie Barry this month.
The Black Cats are one of several clubs connected with a deal for the highly touted young striker, who was recalled from a successful spell with League One side Stockport County earlier this month. The Villa youngster scored 16 goals in 24 appearances in all competitions for the Hatters in the first half of the season before being called up by his parent club at the start of January.
According to Sky Sports, the Premier League club will assess Barry in training over the next few weeks before deciding on a loan move this month. It follows a reported contact from Scottish Premiership club Celtic, who are claimed to be interested in a permanent transfer for the 21-year-old.
However, Villa are unlikely to sell the striker on a permanent basis this month, despite interest from Boro, Leeds United, Derby County, Millwall and the Black Cats.
The decision to keep Barry at Villa Park for the next two weeks means that a prospective move to the Stadium of Light would only take place at the end of the month, should Sunderland made an approach.
The Black Cats have already created ripples in the second division, signing the extremely talented Enzo Le Fee on loan from AS Roma, with an option to buy if they return to the top flight at the conclusion of the season, in a reputed €24 million (£20.2 million) transaction.
Regis Le Bris’ side has once again been linked with former Everton striker Tom Cannon, while Southampton’s Ben Brereton Diaz has also been linked with a transfer to Wearside.
Sunderland striker Aaron Connolly has also been linked with a move to fellow Championship club Millwall, having battled for playing time since signing at the Stadium of Light in the summer.
