Nottingham Forest ‘in talks’ as striker transfer takes serious twist, Deal or no deal? Should Forest sell him?

West Ham are reported to have opened talks with Nottingham Forest over a January deal for striker Taiwo Awoniyi. No fee has been mentioned, but Sky are reporting that the Hammers are making a “serious attempt” to sign Awoniyi, the Nigeria international whose goals did so much to help keep Forest in the top-flight in their first two seasons after winning promotion. Despite having a season marred by injuries, the 27-year-old did score his first goal of the year last week when the Reds defeated Wolves 3-0 in the top tier. Additionally, he had a fleeting appearance against his old team, Liverpool, on Tuesday night from the bench.

Florian Plettenberg, a reporter for Sky, said on X this morning that West Ham is now attempting to sign Taiwo Awoniyi with immediate effect. Discussions have begun. The 27-year-old striker has a deal with Forest that runs through 2027. Forest has stated that they will only consider moving Awoniyi if a successor is found first. They are also rumored to still be interested in Santiago Giménez, the Mexican striker for Feyenoord who turned them down in the summer.

Danyal Khan, a Midlands correspondent for Sky Sports, responded to the news by saying: “To be honest, it would make a lot of sense.” We were discussing about West Ham severely requiring a striker because of injuries to Niclas Füllkrug, and because Michail Antonio is out long-term. Speaking of Awoniyi once more, I witnessed Forest play Luton in the FA Cup on Saturday. He appeared to require more minutes to catch up after starting that game. He touched me a little strangely. In the first two seasons following their promotion from the Championship, Awoniyi was a crucial member of this Forest team; in essence, his goals kept them afloat. For them, he scored some crucial goals. But because of Chris Wood’s form and a pretty nasty injury he sustained last season, he hasn’t been able to play often or really get up to match sharpness.
