Done deal: Ex-Sunderland striker joins Championship rivals on loan
It has been reported that Joe Gelhardt, a former Sunderland loanee, has completed a temporary move to Hull City, a Champions League competitor. After midfielder Matt Crooks joined the Tigers permanently earlier in the month, the 22-year-old arrives from parent club Leeds United as their second January window acquisition. The forward had only played nine minutes of Championship football in the first half of the season and had been on the fringes of Daniel Farke’s plans before leaving Elland Road.
Gelhardt previously scored three goals during his half-season loan at Sunderland in 2022–2023, including one against Hull in a thrilling 4–4 draw at the Stadium of Light. To deliver the most recent news, analysis, and team and injury updates straight to your phone, The Echo has started a new WhatsApp SAFC Channel. Gelhardt stated: “It’s a happy moment for me,” following the announcement of his relocation to the MKM Stadium. I’ve discussed the club’s plans and direction with the manager, and I’m eager to get started and play. I can’t wait to collaborate with the management. He thinks I play better off the nine, perhaps slightly behind or off the right. My ideal positions are as a striker or directly behind one, where I strive to help the team score goals and win games. Every football player hopes to put in a lot of training throughout the week in order to play on the weekend. I haven’t experienced it in a few years, so I’m eager to resume playing and relive the match day experience.
“I can’t always take four strikers with us,” Leeds manager Farke stated in reference to Gelhardt’s absence from the first team before the squad’s victory over Luton Town at home in November. Although it’s difficult for him, I must commend his training performances and attitude. This is necessary. He must ensure that he is ready for the opportunity when it presents itself. He needs to get ready since his time will come. I am unable to gripe about it. He is an excellent teammate and human person. Since this is professional football, we just have a lot of possibilities.
