Championship players Sunderland can sign for free this summer – including Leeds and Sheff Wed stars
As a pivotal month progresses, Sunderland has two priorities both on and off the field. The Black Cats are still very much in the running for promotion to the Premier League after their recent 1-0 victory against Portsmouth at home made Regis Le Bris’ team only two points outside of the automatic promotion spots as they get ready to play Burnley, who are presently in second place. By the time February rolls around, we should have a better idea of the Black Cats’ chances thanks to a difficult-looking trip to Derby County and a home matchup against struggling Plymouth Argyle scheduled before the end of January.
Enzo Le Fee, a French midfielder for Roma, decided to join Sunderland on loan for the rest of the season, marking the conclusion of the Stadium of Light’s first incoming deal. The stadium’s management is also intent on expanding Le Bris’ team during the transfer window. Following their collaboration with French club Lorient, the former France Under-21 player has been reunited with Le Bris on Wearside. The Black Cats have been linked to players like Southampton striker Ben Brereton-Diaz and Aston Villa youngster Louie Barry in recent days, so Le Fee won’t be the only arrival in the first month of the year. However, Sheffield United is anticipated to be in the lead for the latter.
Before the transfer window shuts early next month, wingers Jewison Bennette and Abdoullah Ba, as well as academy products Harrison Jones and Trey Ogunsuyi, may join defender Zak Johnson in leaving on loan. As the former Hull City player nears the end of his current contract, striker Aaron Connolly has been heavily linked to a move to Championship opponent Millwall. Connolly’s long-term future on Wearside will need to be decided, but the outcome of Sunderland’s promotion campaign could have a significant impact on any final decisions regarding long-term movements for players like Wilson Isidor and newcomer Le Fee.
Sunderland is not the only Championship team that must make decisions regarding the contracts of current players. The Black Cats could benefit from this regardless of the division they play in next season because some attractive players are currently scheduled to be available on free transfers at the end of the current campaign.
