Cardiff City ‘hope’ to complete transfer before Swansea City derby as they eye striker
The Bluebirds are keen to sign Danish striker Yousef Salech
Omer Riza expresses his optimism that Cardiff City would make a move prior to Saturday’s pivotal South Wales derby match. The team is reportedly nearing an agreement on Danish striker Yousef Salech.
Vakoun Bayo cancelled off Cian Ashford’s second-half goal with three minutes remaining on Tuesday night, leaving the Bluebirds disappointed.
Cardiff will be hoping to add to their ranks before the weekend, with 22-year-old forward Salech, who plays in Sweden’s top flight with Sirius, a player they are looking to capture in order to bolster their forward line. Read the full story here.
Riza responded, “I hope so, yeah,” when asked if a signing would be made before to Saturday’s game.Get our Cardiff City newsletter every day by subscribing here.
He responded, “Striker position, wingers potentially, hopefully within the next few days we will get a few players through the door,” when asked if a striker was a top priority.
“Might be one, doubt it will be two. Some items involving players are still pending. I’m hoping that tonight’s performance will convince a few players to say, “I want a piece of this.” Hopefully, they will enter through the door eventually.
“I talk to the board about transfers every day. I talk to Mr Tan, Ken (Choo, CEO), Mehmet (Dalman, chairman) and Paddy (Deboys, head of recruitment). We all talk, and the players on the list I sent out have worked really hard to get in.” We’re having good communication, so maybe these players will start showing up.
“Over the next days, it will become evident with reference to the players. I apologise for requiring patience, but these things take time, and it will happen when it does. Things are taking place.
“Potentially we could have one coming in before the derby game and he may get some minutes potentially. We will see how they come in the building and where they are at – so hopefully.”
The Bluebirds climbed out of the relegation zone on Tuesday, but Portsmouth immediately behind them have two games in hand.
Riza said he hopes the performance, which was positive for large parts, against Watford will help to convince would-be signings to join the club this month. Because they need help.
Riza, however, was ultimately disappointed that two more points had been wasted and lamented that he believes the team has lost up to eight points since he took over.
The game left him “frustrated for the players,” he remarked. “They put in a lot of effort once more and earned three points, but if you don’t put in enough effort, you offer other teams a chance to win the game again. We should have moved up to 13th or 14th place in the league with eight more points from the last four games, but it’s shoulda, woulda, coulda.
