With 20 games remaining in the Championship season, Leeds United stay top of the standings when England’s second division resumes this weekend after a break for FA Cup activity.
However, after two consecutive draws in which Leeds lost leading positions to Blackburn and subsequently Hull City, the lead at the top was reduced to a single point. Burnley and Sheffield United are near to Leeds.
Sunderland is fourth, three points behind Leeds, and the four teams appear to be in a mini-battle for the top two spots. Sheffield United is poised to sign Ben Brereton Diaz and Hamza Choudhury.
Burnley have recruited Oliver Sonne and Ashley Barnes, while Sunderland’s signing of Enzo Le Fee has Leeds fans concerned. The Whites have failed to make any substantial progress in terms of January arrivals.
Burnley are looking to make a huge impact in the Championship with Morgan Whittaker Scott Parker’s squad hopes to cut the gap on Leeds further by signing one of the Championship’s brightest young players. According to Fabrizio Romano, Burnley have made a bid for Plymouth’s Morgan Whittaker.
Whittaker was one of the Championship’s top players last season and is worth £10 million, but he has only scored three goals for Plymouth this season. But Parker wants him to join Burnley in the coming weeks.
According to Romano, Burnley has submitted an official bid to capture Morgan Whittaker from Plymouth Argyle. “He was already at the top of their list last summer.”
Burnley’s purchase of Whittaker would replace a familiar figure from Leeds.
Whittaker, who contributed 27 Championship goals for a Plymouth side that ended 21st last season, would be a significant indication of purpose from Burnley heading into the second half of the season.
If Parker signs the former Swansea City player, he will add competition on Burnley’s right wing and most likely replace Jaidon Anthony.
Last season’s Leeds loanee started 22 Burnley league games. However, Leeds should be wary of this action. Whether Burnley’s bid is accepted remains to be seen, but the intent is there, which should bother Leeds.
