Large fire breaks out in industrial building

Firefighters have been battling a fire at an industrial facility in Leicester.

According to the Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service, the fire occurred at a building on Great Central Street around 04:00 BST on Thursday.

People living nearby were advised to keep their windows and doors closed owing to the high level of smoke.

Police are also on the site and have warned people to avoid Bath Lane, Jarvis Street, Welles Street, and All Saints Road.

Incident station manager Darren Weston told BBC Radio Leicester that the incident started in a cash and carry unit.

He stated that there were no reports of any injuries.

“We have quite a strong northerly wind today so the smoke is going in a southerly direction, away from the incident towards the west end of the city but it is dissipating very well,” according to him.

A fire service spokesperson said the source of the blaze, which had been extinguished, had not to be determined, but firefighters remained on the scene to dampen down the damaged structure.

They claimed crews were investigating the building’s “integrity.” The Environment Agency stated that it was working with the fire service to reduce the risk of pollution in surrounding waterways.
