Fire service confirms cause of thick clouds of black smoke over Plymouth Hoe-VIEW

The fire and ‘explosions’ on the Plymouth Hoe has been confirmed to be caused by a camping gas cylinder. Firefighters were called to the scene of the fire on Hoe Road at 11.33am this morning, Friday, October 11.

As crews arrived at the scene, they found a tent alight on the promenade grass, near Smeatons Tower. A camping gas cyclinder was confirmed to be involved in the fire.

One individual told PlymouthLive they heard ‘gas explosions’ near the military facility. Thick plumes of black smoke could be seen shooting into the sky in a video from the area.

It is not thought that the fire caused any injuries to anyone. The fire service has reported that a minor area of the grass was damaged by the fire.

PlymouthLive has been informed by a Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue representative that a tent and a camping petrol cylinder caught fire. At 11.33 a.m., they reported, “We were called to Hoe Road, where a small tent was burning on the grassy promenade.

A hose reel jet was utilised by one crew member to put out the fire and cool a camping gas cylinder that had been a part of the incident. There were no injuries; however, there was some little grass damage.
