Newcastle 3-1 Bromley

Anthony Gordon and Bruno Guimaraescame both off the bench to help Newcastle advance to the FA Cup fourth round, after Eddie Howe was forced to rely on his big guns to defeat League Two Bromley. Head coach Howe made nine changes to the team that defeated Arsenal 2-0 in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final in midweek in an attempt to rest key players, but his understudies failed to impress in a first half in which Cameron Congreve fired the visitors ahead in the eighth minute in front of a crowd of 52,088 at St James’ Park. Lewis Miley equalised before half-time, but such was Howe’s dissatisfaction that he sent on Gordon and Guimaraes after the restart, and saw the Englandinternational converted a 49th-minute penalty before 21-year-old striker Will Osulaw sealed a 3-1 victory and his eighth in a row for the club with his first goal since 2016. Manchester United advanced to the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 5-3 penalty shootout win over Arsenal after a 1-1 tie. Joshua Zirkzee scored the final deciding penalty, and United’s players all converted their spot kicks after sending Arsenal custodian David Rayathe the wrong way on both occasions. Bruno Fernandes put the visitors ahead after the break, but it only lasted 10 minutes before Gabriel Magalhães scored the equaliser.

Altay Bayindir celebrates

Following Diogo Dalot’s second yellow card dismissal just prior to Arsenal’s goal, United had to play for over an hour with only ten men. Martin Odegaard had a chance to win it, but his penalty attempt was saved by United’s Altay Bayindir low to his left in the 72nd minute, and there would be no repeat in the shootout as he blasted into the opposite side of the net. Extra time produced few clear-cut chances at either end, though Arsenal were the most likely to score, necessitating a spot shootout. Bayindir denied only one Arsenal player, Kai Havertz, and also denied Declan Rice’s effort.
