Editorial: Sunderland’s bold moves continue to fascinate fans
The best part of being a Sunderland supporter at the moment is speculating about what the ruling regime will do next.
I don’t doubt their capacity to make important judgements and get them right, but I find it fascinating how
meticulously thorough each decision appears to be. I mean that in the most polite way imaginable.
For example, the purchase of Enzo Le Fee caught everyone in the football world—not just Sunderland fans—
completely off guard. To be honest, I can’t recall the last time we signed something that caused such an incredible
response. As a self-described idiot, I have to admit that before he was connected to us, I had never heard of him. It is
impossible to ignore the amount of buzz surrounding this signing, though, and it makes me question how we were
able to pull it off.
What comes next, then? What more are we getting ready to do that is so ridiculous? Another well-timed transfer
market risk might mean the difference between Sunderland being the brave underdog in the battle for the top two
positions and becoming the team that other teams begin to envy and worry about right away.
When asked what we required in January before the window opened, I gave the succinct response, “Not a lot.”
Although there is always room for improvement, this team has carried us thus far, and I don’t believe there are any
obvious flaws that require immediate repair.
Le Fee’s addition, however, is a good example of what ought to be done: even though we don’t require many players,
we should add them wherever possible if they represent a significant improvement over our current roster. Although
it’s a lovely luxury to have, we didn’t need him.
Things have somewhat changed since then. To guarantee sufficient coverage down that side of the pitch between now
and May, we’ll probably need to buy a left-back due to Aji Alese’s injury, but other than that, everything is as it is.
Only players who are superior than our current roster should be added.
One of the club’s best qualities right now is its pleasant unpredictability.
Consider the end of the summer season. We were in a strong position to sign players like Chris Mepham and Salis
Abdul Samed since we were at the top of the table. We are now a desirable option for players with aspirations who do
not wish to spend too much time in the Championship. That position would be further strengthened if they won on
Friday at Burnley, which seems like an impossible challenge considering they are undefeated at home and have only
given up four goals at Turf Moor.
In our season, this is a very important week. Although I disagree with the notion of “must-win games” in January,
three points would undoubtedly make a big impact in this game. It might influence our promotion effort in terms of
our league position and our capacity to draw in the top players this window has to offer.
We’re moving forward. The club exudes enthusiasm, and everything appears to be moving in the right path.
To put the wheels in motion for a legitimate push for the top two spots in the league, let’s hope the Lads can pull off
an incredible victory on Friday night.
