Transfer preference for £7m Sunderland target revealed as Middlesbrough receive record offer

Sunderland has learnt of Ben Brereton Diaz’s transfer choice if he leaves Southampton this month. According to the Daily Mail, the Chilean striker is solely interested in returning to Sheffield United. Sky Sports claimed on Saturday that Brereton Diaz was desired by both his old club Blackburn Rovers and the Black Cats.

After paying £7 million for him in the summer, the Saints want to include a buy-back clause in any loan agreement for him. Sunderland is the only team ready to agree to this, which is why Brereton-Diaz will remain on the South Coast.

According to the Mail, he will only consider a move to the Blades, and he will stay at St Mary’s Stadium if a move to United does not work out. They say he and his girlfriend are expecting a baby, therefore he doesn’t want to disrupt his family life. Brereton Diaz spent the second half of last season on loan at Sheffield United, so he is familiar with the place.

He clarified: “We are very close to signing a winger now in the next 24 hours, and then, hopefully, we will get another one just before the Millwall game.”
