One Sunderland loanee did something incredibly out of character, he has gone from ‘isolated’ to exciting

It was always going to be difficult for the French manager to get rid of the deadwood when Regis Le Bris took over as Sunderland’s manager in the summer. Several players who were in and out of the first team throughout the 2023–2024 season were therefore far from guaranteed to be included in the new manager’s plans because it was evident that Le Bris was eager to reduce the size of his club. Attacker Luis Hemir was sent out, and players like Timothee Pembele and Pierre Ekwah were approved for loan moves back to France. Although the Portuguese striker failed to score any goals in the Championship last season, his most recent achievement raises the possibility that he has turned his career around.

Hemir, a striker who was quite prolific at the junior level with Portuguese team Benfica, joined Sunderland ahead of the 2023–24 season with a ton of potential and goalscoring promise. It’s reasonable to say, though, that his transfer to Wearside didn’t exactly work out because he seemed “isolated” up front and failed to score in 23 Championship games.

Fortunately for the young Portuguese player, he appears to be back to his best following his loan transfer to Juventus, where he now leads the line for their third division team. With his most recent goal against Catania, where he shifted the ball onto his left foot from outside the area and rifled it past goalkeeper Alessandro Farroni, Hemir has now scored three goals in his previous five games.

Hemir moved to Juventus with a buyout option after Sunderland approved the deal on the day of the summer deadline. Although there is no indication of Juventus’ decision about the attacker, he still has a chance to improve his dismal start at the club even though he might not be ready for the first team if he returns to Wearside. His confidence when playing at the Championship level will be greatly influenced by his experience playing against senior players in Italy, although at a lower level. Hemir might be used on loan in a lower league EFL transfer after returning from Italy. This would be a true litmus test for whether or not he is a good fit for the English game.
