“From what I hear” – Claim made on Sunderland AFC star Anthony Patterson as Man Utd and Spurs lurk

Sunderland feel optimistic in their ability to keep key players such as Anthony Patterson beyond the end of the January transfer window.

Former Sunderland top scout Mick Brown shared this information with Football Insider.

The Black Cats aim to retain several key players who have helped the club reach the top of the Championship standings.

Patterson has been important when fit, and Trai Hume and loanee Chris Mepham have played key roles in defence.

Dan Neil has once again proven to be a valuable asset in midfield, and Jobe Bellingham and Chris Rigg are performing admirably for their age.

If a handful of their key players are sold during the January transfer window, it could jeopardise their chances of promotion to the Premier League.

This is even with Enzo Le Fee’s arrival in mind, as the Frenchman’s loan move to the Stadium of Light has sparked plenty of interest.

Mick Brown on Anthony Patterson’s future at Sunderland

Brown, who is still well-connected to the Wearside club, has been told that his previous club is confident in their ability to keep Patterson beyond the conclusion of the January window.

He told Football Insider, “He’s a very promising custodian.” I’m impressed with what I’ve seen of him, and I can see why a number of scouts and organisations are looking into him.

“But I can’t think of many Premier League clubs that would sign him tomorrow and immediately start him as their number one custodian.

“Manchester United and Tottenham are interested in him as a long-term first-choice, but he is currently behind Onana and Vicario.” So, if they can’t offer him regular football now, I doubt he’d want to move.

“Having come through the academy, I’d expect him to stay with them unless he receives an offer he can’t refuse, which won’t happen in January.”

“Sunderland is a large club, and the fans are quite passionate. They are currently performing well and have a solid chance of returning to the Premier League this season provided they maintain their current form.

“So they should be capable of keeping their best players in January, and from what I hear, they’re confident they can keep hold of them.”

Sunderland should be confident about keeping Anthony Patterson

Championship - Sunderland v Stoke City

The Black Cats have several major advantages.

For starters, they are currently performing well, which may make the goalie more reluctant to leave, especially if he is not promised playing time elsewhere.

He’s reached the point in his career when he requires consistent game time, something he won’t get at Old Trafford or Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Both teams are appealing destinations, but they would have to pay a significant sum to sign him, given that the keeper still has a lot of time left on his contract.

In addition, prospective clubs may be unwilling to pay a large sum of money on a potential backup shot-stopper.
